Life as an Olympian Women’s Bodybuilder

Balancing motherhood, a career, and elite level bodybuilding is no easy feat, but for me it is a reality. Competing in the Olympia, the most prestigious bodybuilding competition in the world, while raising three children and working as a dental hygienist is a testament to discipline, time management, and the passion for the sport.

A lot of people don’t understand my why. Why would I want to put myself through the grueling workouts, strict meal plans, and precise attention to detail in prep, all while raising a family and having a career? What initially began as a way for me to transform my physical self into a version I wanted to see in the mirror has now shifted into a mental transformation. The mental aspect of bodybuilding cannot be overstated and could be arguably more important than the physical. I have learned how to manage stress, resist temptation and maintain focus. I honed my ability to visualize success, handle competition day nerves, and push through fatigue when others might falter. To me this mental toughness is what sets me apart as a top competitor, overcoming these obstacles requires a level of focus and understanding that can only come with experience, and can spread into every facet of your life.

As a 49-year-old professional bodybuilder and a mother, competing in the Olympia isn’t just about personal achievement and physical excellence, it’s about showing my children the value of hard work, dedication, and following one’s passion. I want my children to see first-hand what it takes to compete at the highest level, and hope they learn valuable lessons about perseverance and self-discipline. While some might view having children as a limitation to their competitive goals, I view it as a source of strength and motivation. Every competition becomes an opportunity to show my children that age and family responsibilities are not barriers to success, but rather can enhance your journey. Being a role model for my children, especially as a female athlete carries deep personal meaning.
